Generation One

1. Windsor¹ Pipes (1) was born on 9/16/1740 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.¹^,² He married Jane McAfee (2) before 1769. He died on 4/19/1806 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi, at age 65.¹
He may have been born in Philadelphia but to date there is no proof of his birth place. Philadelphia has been mentioned in one or two books about the family, but never proven. He more likely was born in Morristown, New Jersey where his father located as early as 1736 with the Hathaway family from Massachusetts.
Windsor is mentioned in Morristown records in 1759 and 1765 then in Tyron Co., N. Carolina in 1769 then in SW Pennsylvania (Greene Co.) land records in 1771 and then said to have been in Kentucky from 1773 to 1780 ( his oldest son Abner's obituary says 1773 to 1780) There is a record of his presence in Clarksville, near the fort of George Rogers Clark in September of 1780. His name is listed as one of those persons selling corn to the fort for dry goods after devastating raids by the indians in July and August. In 1781 he appears in Natchez, Mississippi territory records. The remainder of his life is spent in Mississippi.
His name is variously spelled as Winsur, Winsor, Windsor and Winser. His will uses Windsor but he signs it Winser.
An additional note of importance is that Windsor's grandson, Isaac Newton Pipes marked in the 1880 Census that his father, Abner, was born in Mississippi. This contradicts Abners own Obituary that said he ( Abner ) was born in Kentucky in 1773.
¹^,³^,⁴ He left a will on 5/16/1805 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi; will is recorded in Fayette, Jefferson Co. Mississippi. It mentions his wife Jeanette (Jane), and 5 sons viz: John, Joseph, Abner, David and Charles. His 3 daughters are also mentioned as Jeanette, Polly and Letitia.¹

+ 3. ii. Mary Pipes (9) was born on 3/14/1771. She married John Stowers (59) circa 1784.

+ 4. iii. Abner Pipes (3) His birth place and date are subject to controversy. Someone stated in his obituary that he was born in Kentucky, near Louisville in 1773 and that his family moved to Mississippi territory when he was 7 or 8 years old. No one has been able to ascertain that this account is true or untrue. In the 1880 Census, his son, Isaac Newton states that his father was born in Mississippi. He married Elizabeth Odam (60) circa 1797 in Mississippi.

+ 5. iv. John L. Pipes (7) was born on 1/27/1774. He married Mary Taylor (67) before 1798.

+ 6. v. Letitia Pipes (10) was born circa 1780 in Adams Co., Mississippi. She married Robert Taylor (75) circa 1800 in Adams Co., Mississippi.

7. vi. Joseph Pipes (4) was born on 3/23/1780 in Adams Co., Mississippi; has no records to prove his birth in Adams Co. but that is the most likely place in view of his family.¹ He married Mary Collins (80) in 1808. He and Mary Collins (80) obtained a marriage license on 1/16/1808 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi; A license was recorded in Marriage Book A pg 83 for Joseph and Mary Owens. mary was a widow whose maiden name was Collins.¹ He died on 8/9/1824 at age 44.¹
He has no record of having children, although his wife, Mary Collins, had three children from her marriage to Martin Owens. These children show on the Census records and Tax Rolls for Adams Co. in 1816 and 1820. These records are reported in Mrs. Ellsberry's book.¹

+ 8. vii. David Pipes (5) was born on 5/14/1790 in Adams Co., Mississippi. He married Martha Witherington (81) in 1821.

+ 9. viii. Charles Pipes (6) was born on 1/14/1792 in Adams Co., Mississippi. He married Winifred Huey (88) , there is a marriage request approved by the Orphans Court on April 13, 1812 for this marriage to Winifred Huey. The date of the marriage must have been soon after. This was required because of his age and the previous death of his parents. He must have been about 19 years old when his mother died in 1811.

Generation Two

2. Jeanette² Pipes (8) (Windsor¹) was born on 11/18/1769.¹ She married William Collins (56) before 1789 in Mississippi.¹ She died circa 1839 in Adams Co., Mississippi.¹
Her place of birth is in question as we do not know where Windsor was living in 1769 for certain. He is listed as being in Tyron Co. N. Carolina in Dec, 1769. He surveyed some land there for James McAfee, made a claim for some land for himself and may have met his wife Jane McAfee there.
She left a will on 7/29/1829; There is a codicil dated 18 March, 1830. The will is in will book 1 page 447 in Adams Co., Mississippi.

The two known children of Jeanette² Pipes (8) and William Collins (56) were as follows:

10. i. Mary³ Collins (57) was born circa 1789.

11. ii. Elizabeth Collins (58)¹^,¹^,¹ was born circa 1792.¹

3. Mary² Pipes (9) (Windsor¹) was born on 3/14/1771; may have been born in Pennsylvania, as Windsor sold land there in 1771.¹ She married John Stowers (59) circa 1784.¹ She died before 1817 in Mississippi.

The seven known children of Mary² Pipes (9) and John Stowers (59) were as follows:

12. i. Caleb³ Stowers (90) was born in 1785 in Adams Co., Mississippi. He died in 1869.

13. ii. Nancy Stowers (91) was born in 1785 in Adams Co., Mississippi. She died in 1844.

14. iii. Lewis Stowers (92) was born in 1788 in Adams Co., Mississippi. He died in 1842.

15. iv. Mary Stowers (93) was born in 1793 in Adams Co., Mississippi.

16. v. Joseph Stowers (94) was born in 1796 in Adams Co., Mississippi. He died circa 1850.

17. vi. James Stowers (95) was born in 1798 in Adams Co., Mississippi. He died in 1859.

18. vii. Louisa Stowers (96) was born in 1803.

4. Abner² Pipes (3) (Windsor¹). His birth place and date are subject to controversy. Someone stated in his obituary that he was born in Kentucky, near Louisville in 1773 and that his family moved to Mississippi territory when he was 7 or 8 years old. No one has been able to ascertain that this account is true or untrue. In the 1880 Census, his son, Isaac Newton states that his father was born in Mississippi.¹^,³ He married Elizabeth Odam (60) circa 1797 in Mississippi.¹ He married Delilah Cable (62) on 11/19/1807 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi; Marriage Book A. pg 62.¹ He married Mary Hynum (66) on 12/4/1825 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi; Marriage book A pg 227.¹ He died in 1834 in Rodney, Jefferson Co., Mississippi.¹^,³
He provides us with one of the most interesting clues as to the travels of Windsor Pipes and Jane Mcaffee between 1771 and 1780. Recorded in the book "Jersey Settlers" is an obituary which was first uncovered by Ella Pipes Dumas in 1967. The obituary is for Abner and apears in the Wednesday, August 27, 1934 edition of the Southern telegraph of Rodney, Mississippi.
It reads thus:
At his residence, near Greenville, in this county, on the 31st ulto., after a protracted illness, Mr. Abner Pipes, in the 62nd year of his age. He was born near Louisville, in the state of Kentucky, and in his eight year, came to Natchez ( in 1780) when this country was subject to the British Crown. About the time of the evacuation of this country by the Spanish Authorities, in 1795, he removed to the neighborhood in which he has ever since resided, and in which he died.

20. ii. David D. Pipes (11)⁵ was born in 1800. He married Celia Williams (369) on 10/27/1825 in East Feliciana Pa., Louisiana.⁶ He died after 4/ /1836.¹^,⁶
He was named the executor of his father's estate and is named one of the heirs, but nothing further is known of this descendant. He does not appear in county tax or census rolls after 1835. He does appear in a deed between Mary Pipes ( his grandmother) and his wife Celia and himself in April of 1836 in 1836.¹^,⁶

21. iii. Windsor Pipes (12)⁵ was born in 1802. He died before 1835.¹
He was not named in his father's will in 1835, so it is assumed that he died before that date.¹

22. iv. Joseph Pipes (13)⁵ was born in 1804. He died circa 1835.¹
He was not named in his father's will or estate and so is presumed to have died before that date.

+ 23. v. John W. Pipes (14) was born in 1806 in Mississippi. He married Mary Ann Raney (102).

The four known children of Abner² Pipes (3) and Delilah Cable (62) were as follows:

24. i. William³ Pipes (15) was born in 1811. He died circa 1835.¹
He; was not mentioned in his father's will or estate, so he is presumed to have died before 1835.¹

25. ii. Eliza Ann Pipes (63) was born in 1815 in Mississippi. She married David W. Mitchell (105); and the marriage is recorded in marriage Book B page 49.¹^,⁷ She married Daniel M. Martin (106); and this marriage is recorded in Book B page 257.

26. iii. Mary Jane Pipes (64) was born on 3/20/1820 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi. She married Latham Brown (107) on 3/19/1840 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi; Mrs. Ellsberry's book lists this date as the 20th of March.¹^,⁷ She died on 2/16/1862 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi, at age 41.¹

27. iv. Delilah Adeline Pipes (65) was born on 3/16/1824 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi. She married Andrew J. Watson (108) on 2/4/1845 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi.⁷ She died on 1/21/1848 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi, at age 23.

The three known children of Abner² Pipes (3) and Mary Hynum (66) were as follows:

28. i. James H.³ Pipes (16) was born in 1827 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi. He died on 4/17/1899 in Rocky Springs, Claiborne Co., Mississippi.⁶
His Obituary from the April 20th, 1899 edition of the Port Gibson Reveille reads: " At the ripe age of 71 years, Mr. James H. Pipes of the Rocky Springs neighborhood, died April 17th 1899. He had been in very feeble helath for a year, and his death, though sudden, was not altogether unexpected.
He was educated at Oakland College in AnteBellum days with such men as Rev. J.A. B. Jones and Rev. Dr. Markham.
It is said that he was a man of remarkable unselfishness, devoting his entire life to the welfare of others.".⁶

+ 29. ii. Isaac Newton Pipes (17) was born in 1829 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi. He married Ann Eliza Evans (109) on 11/21/1849 in Bastrop, Morehouse Parish, Louisiana.

30. iii. Infant Pipes (170).¹^,¹^,¹ This child was listed in his father's will as being "my unborn child".¹

5. John L.² Pipes (7) (Windsor¹) was born on 1/27/1774.¹ He married Mary Taylor (67) before 1798.¹ He died on 5/9/1827 in Adams Co., Mississippi, at age 53.¹
He was the founder and owner of "Pine Ridge" plantation, and was a very successful planter and pioneer of the Natchez District.

31. i. Hiram³ Pipes (54) was born in Adams Co., Mississippi.
He is not mentioned in his father's will of 1837, so it has been assumed that he died before that date.

32. ii. Cynthia Ann Pipes (71)¹^,¹^,¹ was born in Adams Co., Mississippi.¹ She married Tobias Turner (72) on 7/6/1832 in Adams Co., Mississippi. She married William C. Chamberlain (136) circa 1838 in Adams Co., Mississippi.¹

33. iii. John L. Pipes (29) was born in Adams Co., Mississippi.
He is not mentioned in his father's will of 1837, so it has been assumed that he died before that date.

34. iv. Jane Elizabeth Pipes (122) was born in Adams Co., Mississippi. She married Lewis Thornton Cable (138) on 12/27/1834 in Adams Co., Mississippi; The Marriage records may indicate the Marriage to Lewis Cable took place in 1833, not 1834.¹^,⁷ She married William C. Tait (139) on 2/14/1836 in Adams Co., Mississippi.¹

35. v. Levi Pipes (50) was born in Adams Co., Mississippi. He died before 1862.
He left a will dated aug 25 1860 and it was probated on june 21, 1862. He was never married and left his estate to his brother Lewis C. Pipes.

36. vi. Hester Ann Pipes (73) was born in Adams Co., Mississippi. She married Frederick Taylor (74) on 6/28/1828.¹ She died before 10/ /1838 in Adams Co., Mississippi.

+ 37. vii. David Pipes (18) was born on 11/12/1798 in Adams Co., Mississippi. He married Sarah Holmes (68) on 2/2/1823 in Adams Co., Mississippi.

+ 38. viii. Lewis C. Pipes (23) was born in 1800 in Adams Co., Mississippi. He married Nancy Holmes (69) on 12/11/1823 in Adams Co., Mississippi.

+ 39. ix. Isaac Pipes (30) was born on 6/1/1803 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi. He married Charlotte Cabel (70) on 12/24/1826 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi.

40. x. Emily M. Pipes (121) was born circa 1815 in Adams Co., Mississippi; was a minor at the time of her marriage, as her mothe rgave permission for the ceremony, so her birth is estimated at 1815. She married Thomas H. C. Hankinson (137) on 11/24/1831 in Adams Co., Mississippi.¹

6. Letitia² Pipes (10) (Windsor¹) was born circa 1780 in Adams Co., Mississippi; has no record of birth, but looking at the dates of birth for her brothers and sisters and the date of her marriage, 1780 to 1785 seems most likely. She married Robert Taylor (75) circa 1800 in Adams Co., Mississippi; apparently left no record of her marriage to Robert Taylor, the information comes from "Family Records" as mentioned in Mrs. Ellsberry's book. She is not mentioned in Robert's will, or mentioned in the enumerated Census records.¹ She died before 1820; is not mentioned in her husband's will of 1819, so it is assumed that she passed on before that date.¹

41. i. William³ Taylor (76) was born circa 1800.

42. ii. Windser Taylor (77) was born circa 1802.

43. iii. James Taylor (78) was born circa 1804.

8. David² Pipes (5) (Windsor¹) was born on 5/14/1790 in Adams Co., Mississippi; date of birth is as given in a biographical sketch of his son David Washington Pipes in a book entitled Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Louisiana, published by Goodspeed in 1892.
He married Martha Witherington (81) in 1821.¹ He and Martha Witherington (81) obtained a marriage license on 12/29/1821 in St. Francisville, West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana; has a marriage bond recorded in this Parish on this date. The actual date of the wedding ceremony is apparently not recorded.¹ He married Amanda Montgomery Dunn (82) on 7/18/1838 in Clinton, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana; was the daughter of Henry Dunn and Elizabeth Scott.¹ He died on 8/14/1873 in Beech Grove Plantation, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, at age 83; date of death is reported in "Plantation Homes and Family Trees" by Seebold as July of 1892.
The volume entitled "The Plains and the People" by Virginia Lobdell lists August 14, 1873 as his death date. He was buried on 8/16/1873 in Beech Grove Plantation Cemetery, Clinton, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana.
He served in the Adams Cavalry which was organized in Natchez. He served with this unit and was a Lieutenant during the war of 1812. He was under the command of General Andew Jackson at the battle of New Orleans in 1815.¹

He Died as an infant at the age of 8 months on 6/20/1835 in Beech Grove Plantation, Louisiana.

52. i. Windsor³ Pipes (36) was born on 4/27/1840. He died in 1840. He was buried in 1840 in Henry Dunn Family Cemetery, Louisiana.¹

+ 54. iii. David Washington Pipes (38) was born on 2/20/1845 in Beech Grove Plantation, East Feliciana Pa., Louisiana. He married Ella Victoria Norwood (531) on 4/30/1868 in Richland Plantation, Norwood, Louisiana.

Charles² Pipes (6) (Windsor¹) was born on 1/14/1792 in Adams Co., Mississippi.¹ He married Winifred Huey (88) , there is a marriage request approved by the Orphans Court on April 13, 1812 for this marriage to Winifred Huey. The date of the marriage must have been soon after. This was required because of his age and the previous death of his parents. He must have been about 19 years old when his mother died in 1811.¹ He died on 2/6/1859 in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, at age 67. He was buried in 1859 in Magnolia Cemetery, Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.¹

57. iii. David Pipes (52) was born on 1/7/1818. He married Helen Minerva Oswalt (710) in 1846. He died on 8/10/1870 at age 52.

58. iv. Charles B. Pipes (53) was born in 1821. He died in 1873.

59. v. Winifred Pipes (89) was born circa 1825 in Mississippi. She married John Abraham Bird (711) on 6/15/1840. She died in 11/ /1873 in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.

Generation Three

19. Frances (Fanny)³ Pipes (61) (Abner², Windsor¹)⁵ was born in 1798 in Mississippi. She married (_____) Cobb (97) circa 1826.¹ She married Francis Goza (99); and the marriage is recorded in Port Gibson, Claiborne Co.Mississippi Marraige records.¹

The only known child of Frances (Fanny)³ Pipes (61) and (_____) Cobb (97) was:

60. i. Amanda F.⁴ Cobb (98)¹^,¹^,¹ was born in 1826 in Mississippi.¹

The two known children of Frances (Fanny)³ Pipes (61) and Francis Goza (99) both born in Mississippi were as follows:

62. ii. George W. Goza (101) was born in 1838.

23. John W.³ Pipes (14) (Abner², Windsor¹)⁵ was born in 1806 in Mississippi. He married Mary Ann Raney (102); and the marriage is recorded in Jefferson Co., Mississippi Book B page 47.¹^,⁷ He married Sarah Torrey (104) on 1/8/1835; and the marriage is recorded in Jefferson Co, marriage Book B page 85.¹^,⁷ He died circa 1839.¹

The only known child of John W.³ Pipes (14) and Mary Ann Raney (102) was:

63. i. John⁴ Pipes (103)¹^,¹^,¹ was born between 1831 and 1834 in Mississippi.¹
He; was thought to be the name of this son. It is apparently not recorded, only passed through family memory.¹

There were no known children of John W.³ Pipes (14) and Sarah Torrey (104).

29. Isaac Newton³ Pipes (17) (Abner², Windsor¹) was born in 1829 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi. He married Ann Eliza Evans (109) on 11/21/1849 in Bastrop, Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. He died on 2/18/1888 in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana.
They lived in Claiborne Co., Mississippi until the late 1860's and then moved to Morehouse Parish, Louisiana.
Isaac Newton was a soldier in the Civil War and it is said that he rode with Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry. He was in fact a member of the 4th Mississippi Cavalry with his brother James.

The eight known children of Isaac Newton³ Pipes (17) and Ann Eliza Evans (109) were as follows:

64. i. Orlene Augusta⁴ Pipes (110) was born on 9/1/1850 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi. She married William C. Andrews (118) in 1869 in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. She died on 6/25/1879 in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, at age 28.

65. ii. Charles Abner Pipes (111) was born on 3/23/1852 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi. He died on 4/20/1865 in Claiborne Co., Mississippi, at age 13.
His obituary, supplied to me by Larrie S. Curry, read as follows:
[handwritten funeral notice, original] Obituary / died on Thursday evening the 20th of April, at the residence of his Parents, near Willow Springs, Claiborne County, of confluent Small Pox, Charles A. Pipes, only son of Isaac N and Ann Eliza Pipes, aged Thirteen years and twenty-seven days. The death of this bright and intelligent youth was rendered more distressing to his bereaved mother, from the absence of her husband, now battling in defense of his country under command of the gallant Forest, and ignorant of the great affliction in store for him -- what consolation can we offer to the bereaved Parents, other than reliance on the great Dispenser of our destinies, who "chastens and purifies through affliction".

66. iii. Mary Susanna Pipes (112) was born on 4/6/1855 in Jefferson Co., Mississippi. She married Dr. J.S. Andrews (119) before 1876 in Louisiana. She died on 7/22/1957 in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, at age 102.

67. iv. Josiah Evans Pipes (113) was born on 10/23/1856 in Claiborne Co., Mississippi. He died on 2/3/1862 in Claiborne Co., Mississippi, at age 5.

68. v. Martha Evans Pipes (114) was born on 5/27/1858 in Claiborne Co., Mississippi. She married David Ivey (120). She died in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. She was buried in Old Cemetery, Bastrop, Louisiana.¹

69. vi. Emma Celestia Pipes (115) was born on 11/26/1860 in Claiborne Co., Mississippi. She died on 8/2/1862 in Claiborne Co., Mississippi, at age 1.

70. vii. Annie Cornelia Pipes (116) was born on 11/26/1860 in Claiborne Co., Mississippi. She died on 11/26/1860 in Claiborne Co., Mississippi.

71. viii. Evans Pipes (117) was born on 8/2/1866 in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. He died on 2/12/1958 in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, at age 91.
He was not married. He is buried in the Mer Rouge Cemetery.

37. David³ Pipes (18) (John², Windsor¹) was born on 11/12/1798 in Adams Co., Mississippi.¹ He married Sarah Holmes (68) on 2/2/1823 in Adams Co., Mississippi. He married Minerva Flynn (126) on 4/12/1830 in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana.¹ He married Elizabeth Browning Warner (127) on 11/29/1832 in Louisiana.¹ He died on 11/16/1877 in McLennan Co., Texas, at age 79.¹
His first wife, Sarah Holmes was a sister to his brother Lewis's wife Nancy Holmes.
David was a Methodist Minister and moved with some of his family to Texas in 1876.¹

The three known children of David³ Pipes (18) and Sarah Holmes (68) were as follows:

72. i. Mary⁴ Pipes (123) was born on 12/9/1823 in Mississippi. There were no children from this marriage.¹ She died on 11/23/1844 at age 20.

He became a wealty planter and a sucessful lawyer in Vidalia, Louisiana where he also served as Sheriff and Tax collector. He was at one time a member of the Mississippi legislature.
