Pipes Family From Nova Scotia, Canada
In 1774 William Pipes, age 49, immigrated from England to Fort Cumberland, Nova Scotia, Canada with his sons William, age 22 and Jonathan, age 20. They crossed in the Ship Albion, leaving England form the port of Hull on March 7th, 1774. The stated reason for their leaving was the advancement of their Rents. We have no indication that this William Pipes had any connection to our John Pipes Sr. or the USA Pipes family. Several of his descendants did migrate to the US in later years where they can be found in the New England Area.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Scott C. Miller who is a descendant of William and a resident of Canada who allowed me to copy this genealogy file from his site and place it here on the Pipes family Home Page.

" MURDER IN RIVER PHILIP "
The most dramatic event of the decade occurred in River Philip, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. It was the first civil case of its kind in the county's history.
During the winter of 1837-38, Abraham Seaman and his son, Stephen, had two men working for them as loggers and farmhands. They were William Hussey of River Philip and Maurice Doyle, a wandering labourer.
Around the end of February, 1838, Doyle appeared at the Pugwash store of Henry G. Pineo, where he bought 32 shillings' worth of goods. He told Pineo that he would be working for the Seamans until June and that Stephen Seaman (Pineo's brother in law) would pay his bill. Later that day, Pineo learned that Doyle had just left his employment with the Seamans. Doyle was arrested at once for dept and was ordered to pay 39 shillings, the extra amount being required to cover cost arising from his attempt at fraud. But Doyle had nothing with which to pay.
The matter seemed settled when John Clem, a farmer from River Philip, agreed to hire Doyle as a labourer and to assume responsibility for his dept. On March 7, Pineo's clerk, William Fuller, gave Clem a statement of Doyle's account.
John Clem lived in a rather secluded spot near the mouth of the little stream that emptied into the west side of River Philip. Clem had no family. His Housekeeper, MRS. ELIZABETH PIPES, a widow, described the setting as " a lonely house" where few visitors came with then exception of an occasional neighbour.
The Clem house was quite small and evidently consisted of only two rooms. One room was used by
Mrs. Pipes as her bedroom while Clem slept in the main room near the fireplace. His most valuable possession was a locked trunk which was positioned at the head of his bed and the key to which was carried by Mrs. Pipes. Clem had once admitted to John Winsby, a neighboring farmer, that he had about 40 pounds in his trunk and he had been willing to lend some to Winsby.
Maurice Doyle worked for Clem throughout the spring of 1838, and up to June 27. Outwardly, the two men had maintained a friendly relationship during these months although Doyle gained a reputation for excessive drinking and having little money.
On June 27, 1838, there were two guest visiting the Clem house. They were both the young daughters of Mrs. Pipes, Elizabeth and Jane.
Doyle had given his employer previous notice that he wishes to move on so both men left separately that morning to go to Pugwash. Their purpose was to settle Doyle's account with Pinoe. Clem was the first to go, Doyle following something thereafter. The laborer chatted with John Winsey after crossing the river with ferryman John Sentorius. Both Winsby and Sentorius discussed Doyle's finances and impending departure.
During the afternoon, an unusual number of callers stopped at the Clem house. William Hussey came by because Clem had promised him some seed when he was finished with his planting. Mrs. Pipes suggested that he come back when Clem was at home.
Later, when two men named Cutten and Wetherby paddled up in a canoe, Mrs. Pipes dispatched one of her daughters (Elizabeth) with them for the return trip home.
Shortly after the supper hour, John Clem stopped at the home of John Winsby on the east side of the River Philip. He had carried a bag of barley on his back from Pugwash and wanted a brief rest. The conversation turned to Maurice Doyle and Winsby later recalled Clem having said that " Doyle was not faithful and he did not like him. " Winsby thought of accompanying Clem across the river but Mrs. Winsby was concerned about the tide. Therefore, Clem went alone in his own boat but Winsby kept the barley, promising to deliver it the next morning.
It was around sunset when Clem arrived home. Mrs. Pipes saw him go to bed before she joined her 12 year old daughter (Jane) for the night. The outside door was not bolted.
Around 8 o'clock that evening, Maurice Doyle called at the home of John Sentorius, the ferryman. Half an hour later, Doyle rowed upstream in a boat borrowed from Sentorius. Latertestimony revealed that Doyle must have returned to John Clem's house where he entered by the unlocked door and, wielding an axe, attacked its three occupant. Then Doyle rifled Clem's chest, pocketed the victim's wallet, and left as he had come but discarding his weapon on the ground outside. He climbed into the boat, and crossed the river to pay an innocent call upon the Mulroys who lived directly opposite of John Clem. It was about 10:30 P.M.
About 11o'clock, Doyle bade the Mulroys goodnight and rowed back to the ferryman Sentorius to return his boat. After asking Sentorius to say nothing about his having been in the area, Doyle disappeared in the direction of Amherst.
The next morning, June 28, 1838, William Hussey made a second trip to John Clem's house for seed. It was 5 A.M. but he was surprised by the lack of activity. The only sounds were groans. Swinging open the door, Hussey stepped into the dark interior. Lying on the broad of his back on the bed by the fire was John Clem. The senseless man'd hands were crossed on his chest, his face was bloodied, one ear was nearly sliced from his head, but he was still gasping for life. Hussey bent over the man and tried to shake some words from him. Clem was beyond words.
Hussey then approached the inner room. More blood and disheveld bed clothes met his gaze. On the bed lay Mrs. Pipes with a wound in her forehead. At her feet, her daughter (Jane) was sprawled with a tooth hanging from her mouth and her head dried onto the pillow.
Shaking Mrs. Pipes, Hussey tried to discover what had happened. In response, he heard something about a nightmare so he turned to arouse the daughter. The youth asked for water and Hussey moved to get it. He saw the passage of a shadow announcing the arrival of John Winsby who had come to deliver the bag of barley left behind by Clem the evening before.
Twenty minutes later, John Clem died. Hussey raised the alarm while Winsby summoned help for Mrs. Pipes and her daughter Jane. They were carried to the house of ferryman Sentorius.
Dr. Samuel Patterson, the surgeon from Pugwash, arrived at the Clem house around 7:30 A.M. Upon examining the deceased victim, he found several marks of violence, the worst being a two-inch deep wound that had penetrated the brain. There were also injuries to the left shoulder. Later in the day, the county coroner, George Bergman, Esq., of Pugwash held an inquest at the Clem house. The verdict was murder.
Maurice Doyle's discarded axe, his blood-stained shirt, and the pledge of secrecy sought from Sentorius aroused the authorities to search him out as their number-one suspect. Joseph Avard, Jr., of Westmorland, New Brunswick, and Asa Fillmore of River Philip chased Doyle down in Sussex, N.B. He was brought back to Amherst where he was kept under around-the-clock guard by two men. His trial was held on September 26, 1838, and excited great attention. Newspapers reported that Amhest was crowed by the citizenry of the county who had come out of curiosity of various grade. Pugwashmen George Bergman, Abraham Seaman, Henry Pineo and Dr. Samuel Patterson were called to testify along with 11 others. The evidence was overwhelming. The Judge instructed the jury before it retired. With in ten minutes, the jury returned with a verdict of guilty.
The Novascotian's reporter observed that Doyle who appeared to have hope of acquittal to the last, sank on hearing the verdict. He buried his face in his hands and falling back in his seat with his face and hands resting on his knees he remained in that position sobbing occasionally until he was removed from the Court.
Maurice Doyle was sentenced to death, a penalty that was paid on the gallows at Amherst.

The Clem Murder
(This article appeared in the Oxford Journal on January 7, 1926)

Washington, D.C., January 1, '26
Editor of Journal, Oxford, N.S.

Dear Sir,
I kindly ask space in your paper to relate a crime down the River from Oxford 90 years ago. The story was told by Mrs. Betsy Pipes an old widow, who was kept at our house for charity. Her story was told in this manner:
"I was a cook and housekeeper for John Clem, an old bachelor. Mr. Clem at this time had but one hired man; his name was Doyle. In the morning they both went to Pugwash, and Clem paid Doyle off and came home quite late. He laid down on the floor in front of the fire. My baby and I had a room near the kitchen.
During the night Mr. Clem was murdered, and I was all but killed by heavy blows from the assassin's axe. When the crime was known Doyle was suspicioned.
He was trailed by constable through the County, and captured near Mount Whatley. Clem's purse was found on Doyle when arrested. The constable that arrested him was Asa Fillmore, an uncle of your dear mother. Doyle was taken to Amherst, tried and convicted and hung. He was well prepared for death by a priest-and was sent to Heaven from the hangman's knot, with a smile on his face. Poor old John Clem, who was murdered, did not have such an opportunity."
This story was told at our home in Oxford more than 60 years ago.
Yours Respectfully,
J.R. Thompson.

He met JANE E. LOWTHER January 10, 1852 in Westmoreland, New Brunswick, daughter of WILLIAM LOWTHER and HANNAH UNKOWN.

Notes for JONATHAN RICHARD PIPES:
He was Warden of the Municipality, when there were no incorporated towns in the county, he was the first Warden. In his early thirties he built Wooden bridges at Nappan, Maccan, River Philip, Pugwash, and Wallace, Nova Scotia. Most notable was the Palmerston (Bridge ?) over Pugwash Harbor. By this time he had amassed a fortune which he invested in the construction of a cargo of the 800 ton barge called "Mary W. Pipes". Which was the last ship built in Nappan, N.S.! The new ship was loaded with lumber, apples and cider, the new ship then set sail for the West Indies, to return with molasses and rum. The crew or the ship were never again heard from, thus most of Jonathan Richard Pipes fortune went! About the same time iron bridges were in use, so Jonathan, became a bridge inspector. In 1865 he was given a Majors commission and turn down the offer of Colonel, being to busy. His father and mother resided with them on the family farm.
