1. Abner1 Pipes (60)1 was born in 1738 in Rockaway, Morris Co., New Jersey. He married Mary (______) (61) circa 1778. He died in 1805.
He was a Justice of the Peace in Jefferson County, MS. He moved with his father to Surry County, NC. He and his brother, Windsor, were in Natchez District, District of Santa Catalina, in 1792 (Publications of Mississippi Historical Society, Centernary Series, Vol. 1, p. 426). He left a will on Nov 21, 1802 in Natchez, Adams Co., Mississippi (Also in Natchez Court Records).2

2. Joseph2 Pipes (58) (Abner1)1 was born in 1783 in South Carolina (is listed in the Ellsberry book as born in 1790 in S. Carolina. No source is Available for either date. The 1860 Census lists his age as 70).3,4 He married Jenny (Jane) Grisham (59) on May 30, 1810 (recorded in Adams Co. Mississippi: book 1 pg. 171).3 He died after 1860.3

4. Philip2 Pipes (47) (Abner1)1 was born on Sep 15, 1789 in Adams Co., Mississippi.7 He married Elizabeth Raney (48) on Sep 1, 1812 in Pine Ridge, Adams Co., Mississippi. He died on May 28, 1860 in Douglas, Jackson Pa., Louisiana, at age 70.
He moved with his father, Abner, to Pine Ridge, Mississippi. About 1813, after the death of Abner Pipes, the family moved to Ouachita Parish, Louisiana and settled in what is now known as the Old Douglas Settlement. Philip died in what is now known as Lincoln Parish. (This information from notes of Thomas E. Pipes, 1410 16th St., Lake Charles, LA 70601). His birthdate and marriage date are from notes taken from family bible by Walter H. Pipes, 4512 Orchid, Shreveport, LA 71105. Information given by Mrs. Edith L. Venning, P. O. Box 523, Fairfield, CA 94533, lists marriage date as 7 Aug 1812.

Elizabeth Raney (48)1 was born on Feb 6, 1787. She died on Aug 28, 1874 in Douglas, Jackson Pa., Louisiana, at age 87. She was born in South Carolina, probably in Chester County.

6. Abner2 Pipes Jr. (52) (Abner1) was born circa 1793 in Adams Co., Mississippi. He married Nancy Ferrell (53) on Oct 24, 1813 in Adams Co., Mississippi (In Mississippi Territory book 1 page 284; Register of Orphans of Adams Co. is the record of their marriage. It states: " I do hereby certify that on the 24th day of Oct., 1813 agreeably to a license from the clerks office of Adams Co., I joined together in the Holy bonds of matrimony Abner Pipes and Nancy Ferrell. Given under my name and seal this 26th day of Septmeber, 1814. R,H, Morrow J.P. ( Seal)").9 He died after 1850 in Sabine Co., Texas.9
Abner and Nancy are on the 1840 Census for Union Parish, Louisiana and then the 1850 census for Sabine Co. Texas with their children. There may have been another child born in 1836 whose name is unknown as well as children born in 1824, 1826 and 1829.3,9

Nancy Ferrell (53)1 was born circa 1797 (age was determined form census reocrds, also her place of birth).3

7. Abraham (Abrum)2 Pipes (54) (Abner1)1 was born in 1794 in Mississippi.3,10 He married Elizabeth Grisham (55) on Aug 1, 1810 in Adams Co., Mississippi (recorded in Book 1 page 184). He died on Jul 19, 1873 in Louisiana.3
He was in Capt. William Wood's Louisiana Company in the War of 1812. He was drafted into Wood's Company under the command of General Thomas at Monroe, LA, about January, 1815, and was discharged at Baton Rouge on April 1, 1815. This is from records in the National Archives in Washington, D. C.
Abraham was a Methodist circuit preacher in the area and was noted as being the first man to do so west of the Mississippi. Malcolm Pipes reports that he is aware of the old family cemetery and its location. Abraham owned property in Ouachita Parish half way between the present day towns of Douglas and Choudrant. He probably moved his family to Choudrant before 1820. The property where the homesite was located is currently owned by Willamite Lumber Company. There is a small family burial plot there that is marked only with field stones. It is about 50 yards east of the spot where the house stood. Abraham is buried there along with many other family members.

Elizabeth Grisham (55)1 was born on Mar 4, 1794 in South Carolina.3 She died on Sep 2, 1870 in Louisiana at age 76.3

8. John2 Pipes (49) (Abner1)1 was born circa 1798 in Mississippi.3 He married Mary "Polly" Gibbons (196) on Dec 8, 1823 in Ouichita Pa., Louisiana (recorded in Book A page 81. Mrs Ellsberry's book lists this date of marriage as 1833. It must be a typo as he had children in the 1830 census, so the date must be 1823. This is a calculated guess on my part, considering his age and census records. The LDS IGI has an entry for this marriage as Aug 6 1832, but her name is spelled "Gibbonds". There is also a record in the Ouachita Parish records of the marriage and it lists Aug 6, 1832).3,12
John and Mary are on the 1840 Census for Union Parish, Louisiana and then the 1850 census for Smith Co. Texas with their children. Some Census indexes have them listed as "Piper" instead of Pipes. They are the first Pipes family to migrate to Texas, probably about 1845 or 46.9,13

9. William H.3 Pipes (158) (Joseph2, Abner1)3,3,3 was born on Sep 14, 1811 in Mississippi.3 He married Louisa Dutton (179) on Sep 14, 1831 in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana (License is recorded in Book A page 42).3 He died in 1862 There is a petition filed in the court of Union Parish in 1867 by the childen of William H. Pipes and Louisa his wife, which gives the dates of death for their parents.
There is a deed recorded in Deed Book #9, page 638 in Union Parish, La. in 1871. This deed was to sell the land that belonged to William H and Louisa Pipes for the benefit of their children and heirs. This deed lists the children and some spouses. Subsequent court records concerning the welfare of the children give some dates for births and relatives names. One of these relatives is Edward S. Pipes a brother of William H. Pipes.16

Louisa Dutton (179)3 was born circa 1811 in Alabama.16 She died on Aug 3, 1867 The same petition mentioned in her husband's death gives the date for Louisa's death.

15. Edward Self3 Pipes (164) (Joseph2, Abner1).3,3 Mrs. Ellsberry's book lists his birth as June of 1829. The 1900 Census of Texas lists Feb 1830.3,22 They are married for 30 years in the 1900 Census records. In her pension application she gives Aug 22, 1860 as their marriage date.3,22,23 He died on Feb 17, 1908 in Kaufman, Kaufman Co., Texas. He was buried on Feb 18, 1908 in Kaufman City Cemetery, Kaufman, Kaufman Co., Texas.

His death notice appeared in the Terell DailyTtranscript newspaper on this date. The death notice says that he has the title of Major, from his service in the Civil War. It also states that he moved from Rushton, Louisiana to Texas in 1885.
He is 70 years old in the 1900 Census of Kaufman Co.and is living in Kaufman City with his wife Nancy (age 60) and daughter Florence, age 22.

Nancy Jane Hicks (184)3,23 was born on Mar 16, 1845 in Alabama (In her Civil War Pension Application she gives her birth date as March 16, 1845. In the 1900 Census of Texas she gives April 1840 as her birth year).22,23 She died on Apr 16, 1932 in Kaufman Co., Texas, at age 87.23

John and Martha are listed in the 1850 Census of Sabine Co ., Texas with their first three children. I do not know the place of their birth, may have been Louisiana or Texas.
In the 1860 Census for Nagodoches Co., Texas, he had 7 children, so the last four were born in Texas. In 1860 he was living next door to his parents, Abner and Nancy.9,15,13

He Elizabeth Pipes, widow of James Huey, filed a widow's application for Civil War benefits in 1914. She states that he was a member of a local or home guard unit. The application was denied, based on the fact that the pension law did not cover home guard units.

W. Jones, Capt. Cannady, Jno. Mallory, first Lieutenant, Jno. Collie, 2nd Lieutenant; that the members of their company were kept in reserve until they reached the age of 18 years and that they were then sent to the regular Army;
Affiants further aver that James Huey Pipes (Jim Pipes) was a member of said company and that said Pipes served Honorably with them until the close of the war.

Elizabeth Jane Grissom (165).3 It has been reported to me that Elizabeth Grissom was a full blooded Cherokee Indian. Malcolm Pipes who is a descendant and lived in the area says several of the family that he spoke with knew her and it was common knowledge that she was Cherokee. There has been confusion because of the name similarities between Grisham and Grissom and Elizabeth Grissom has been listed in various places as Elizabeth Grisham. I have spoken with a researcher on the Grisham line who says that there was no such person as Elizabeth Grisham who married James Huey, it had to be Grissom.

William may have died in Vicksburg during the Civil War. His name and date of birth allowed me to connect him to several facts: his Civil War Service, His Marriage and his son named James all appear in the records and by elimination I have connected him to Abraham, Caledonia, The Civil War and his son James. All other persons named William were accounted for when digesting all the facts.19,32,36

Hicks at her Father's residence.16,38 He died on Nov 3, 1897 in Gibslaud, Bienville Parish, Louisiana, . His wife's pension application states that he died in ill health from Bright's disease.16,38 He was buried on Nov 6, 1897 in Gibslaud Cemetery, Gibslaud, Bienville Pa., Louisiana.38

Ann J. Lewis (491)16 died on Feb 7, 1936 in Heflin, Louisiana.16 At the time of her death in February, 1936, Ann J. Pipes had been living in the home of her daughter in Heflin, La. since 1910. Her pension application file has the name of the daughter as Mrs. S.J. Maxey.38
The only known child of Reuben F.4 Pipes (464) and Ann J. Lewis (491) was:

51. Joseph4 Pipes (206) (William3, Joseph2, Abner1) was born on Dec 17, 1842 in Union Pa., Louisiana.39 He married Nahwista James Vickers (651) on Sep 26, 1870 in Union Pa., Louisiana. He died on Sep 23, 1920 in Gueydan, Louisiana, at age 77.
Joseph served in the Civil War as a member of Company "I" of the 12th Louisiana Infantry. He enlisted in August of 1861 as a private and served until 1865 when he was discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant.39

James A.4 Pipes (208) (William3, Joseph2, Abner1)16 was born on May 5, 1848 His age is given in court records in 1869 as nineteen years old, but in the 1860 census he is 12 years old.16,45 He married Rosa Rugg (641) on Dec 25, 1873 in Louisiana. He died on Mar 5, 1934 in Union Co., Arkansas, at age 85. He was buried in 1934 in Craig Cemetery, Union Co., Arkansas.
There is a conflict concerning his birth year. Court records indicate that he was born in 1849 but a descendant claims 1842 as the year of birth. Further work needs to be done. The Census records for 1860 indicate his birth as 1848 or 1849 and gives his age as 12 years old.


Rosa Rugg (641) was born on Oct 12, 1854 in Louisiana. She died on Jan 7, 1931 in Union Co., Arkansas, at age 76. She was buried in 1931 in Craig Cemetery, Union Co., Arkansas.

55. William Columbus4 Pypes (207) (William3 Pipes, Joseph2, Abner1) was born in 1851 His age is given in court records in 1868 as seventeen years old. He is 9 years old in the 1860 census for Union Parish. He married Ann Gibbs (546) in Mar, 1880 in Joplin, Missouri.47 He died circa 1915 in Portland, Oregon.
William changed the spelling of his name to Pypes after leaving Louisiana and lived in Arkansas, Kansas City, Chicago and Portland, Oregon. He worked for the Armour Meat Packing Company for many years.19,47

Ann Gibbs (546) was born in 1856 in Panola Co., Texas.47 She died on Apr 5, 1922 in Kansas City, Missouri.47

Pipes, 1410 16th St., Lake Charles, LA 70601, indicating that my grandfather was Uriah Clinton Pipes, born 27 May 1850 in Douglas, Jackson Parish, LA. His first wife, M. S. Stallings, was identified from a Pipes family bible.

I resided for a few years, after coming to Texas in Coleman and Jones Counties, Texas. I have been married twice during my life time. I am now a widower and did not remarry after the death of my second wife."
"My first wife's name was Sarah E. She died intestate in Linclon Parish, La., on October 8, 1882. We had a farm of 320 acres of land and a small amount of personal property. I adminstred upon her estate. I do not remember the exact nature of the proceedings, no which court therein Linclon Parish it was in. Kirk McGee and John B. Wright as sureties executed a small bond with me. My wife had left surviving two children, being two sons, named: Marshall M. Pipes and Clarence E. Pipes. Clarence E. Pipes died about 4 years ago while sheriff of Gray County Texas, and Marshall M. Pipes is still living. Shortly after these sons become of legal age, I settled with them in full for their share of their mother's estate, paying each in cash his part of the same. This settlement was full and complete and to their satisfaction; neither of these sons have ever at any time since made any demands or requests of me in respect to said estate or said settlement.

The following detail was sent to me in 1999 by Colonel Kenneth Pipes in regards to his military career and to be included in another page I am writing on the military history of our family. In order to preserve this outstanding record for our family, I have included it here as well. Colonel Pipes has indeed maintained the family tradition of outstanding military service to his country.

"I joined the Marine Corps in 1957 and served in a Reserve, 90MM, Light A/A
Gun Battery located in Fresno, Ca. Upon graduation from Fresno State
College with a degree in U.S. History, I was commissioned a Marine Infantry
2nd Lieutenant. During the next 22 years I progressed through the ranks,
retiring in 1982, still an infantryman, as a Lieutenant Colonel. I served as
a Platoon Commander, Company Executive Officer during the Cuban Missile
Crisis, Commanded 3 Companies; 2 in combat while in the Republic of Vietnam,
was a Battalion Combat Operations Officer, also in RVN. Later served for 13
months in the Far East as a deployed Marine Battalion Executive Officer and
Commanded a Battalion at Camp Pendleton, prior to my retirement. In 1982 I
began work in the corporate world as a Nuclear Security Specialist with
Southern Cal. Edison, retiring from that position in 1994. I am currently a
Reserve Patrol Sgt. with the San Diego County Sheriff's Dept.

I served in the following Marine Infantry Battalions: 2nd Bn, 7th Mars; 1st
Bn, 9th Mars; 2nd Bn, 28th Mars; 1st Bn, 26th Mars.; 2nd Bn, 23rd Mars; and
the 1st Bn, 4th Marines. Additional tours of duty include: Marine Corps
Recruit Depot, San Diego; Recruiting Officer in Central and Northern Ca.,
Navada, Utah and part of Idaho; and with a reserve unit in Port Hueneme, Ca.,
where I was a finalist in the 11th Region for the White House Fellows
Program. I am a graduate of and instructed at both the Marine Corps
Amphibious Warfare School and the Marine Corps Command and Staff College,
Quantico Va. While assigned to Quantico I earned a MA in Educational
Guidance and Counceling, granted by the University of Va.

My RVN duty was with the 1st Battalion, 26th Marines from Aug. 1967 to Sept. 1968,
which included the 1968 TET Offensive. Our Battalion was, for 13 months,
involved in heavy and sustained combat throughout Northern and Central I
Corps. I was privileged to command B Company, 1/26, before, during and after
the 77 day Seige of the Khe Sanh Combat Base. On March 30th, 1968 our
Company launched the first offensive action outside the base perimeter since
commencement of the NVA attack on January 20th. The company overran the
heavily reinforced and entrenched NVA 66th Battalion of the 304th Hanoi, Iron
Division. Marines of Company B armed with rifles, machine guns.
flamethrowers, satchel charges, antitank rockets, grenades and bayonets
fought into the enemy trenches, bunkers and command posts; killing
approximately 120 and wounding many, many more. This battle has been
described in Marine Corps Historical documents as one of the only and most
successful bayonet attacks of the entire Vietnam War.

For their heroic actions on March 30th, Marines of the Company were
presented: 2 Navy Cross', 10 Silver Stars, 14 Bronze Stars, 2 Navy
Commendation Medals and well over 100 Purple Hearts. A few days later the
unit received the following message from Gen. Westmoreland:
'OFFICERS AND MEN OF B/1/26 USMC DESERVE HIGHEST PRAISE FOR AGRESSIVE ATTACK NORTH OF KHE
SANH ON 30 MARCH. HEAVY CASUALTIES INFLICTED ON BUNKERS AND ENTRENCHED EMEMY
FORCES INDICATED TYPICAL MARINE ESPIRT DE CORPS AND PROFESSIONALISM. WELL
DONE!'

During my service I was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star W/Combat V,
Meritorious Service Medal, Purple Heart, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry
Medal W/ Bronze and Silver Star. During the period Aug. 67 to Sept. 68 our
Regiment,including our Battalion, received three Presidential Unit Citations.".
